Some Thoughts on Safety Surfacing
First and foremost, decide with us to commit to full compliance with ASTM, CPSC and ADA regulations and guidelines for your playground. Remember, if it's not in your private back yard, it's in a public space and subject to guidelines and regulations, all of which protect YOU from liability exposure as well as the kids from falls!
KIDSAFE does not recommend or install “poured in place” unitary rubber surfacing. For the vast majority of our clients, this is not a cost effective option. If you do have the resources, they're just great and offer unequaled design possibilities.
KIDSAFE is looking closely at several emerging surfacing products that mimic the look of natural grass. At this time, we are just not convinced that you will have the essential impact attenuating qualities or long lasting, repair free life span associated with our other types of surfaces. We will continue to do our research and include this type of surface as soon as we are convinced that it is a good choice for you.
KIDSAFE does not consider pea gravel or sand to be acceptable surfacing materials except as sub-surfaces for drainage underneath wood fiber or shredded rubber.
KIDSAFE highly recommends rubber swing mats (see Childforms.com) under swings and slide exits for loose fill surfaces.
Don't be led to believe there is such a thing as a maintenance free playground surface! If you want to get the full lifetime of use from any surfacing product, understand that maintenance is required. That means it has to be someone's job and has to have a line in someone's budget. There are varied degrees of required maintenance from one type of surface to another but all types have maintenance requirements.
