Border Systems
After handling many similar products as installers, KIDSAFE is convinced that the molded plastic border systems by Childforms.com are the best around. We like the smaller 8” high borders which are sufficient for most applications. (There is also a 12” border). Their ADA ramp is industry standard and their border pieces will not split after a hard blow from a nine pound sledge hammer (our test standard) which tells a lot! These borders are easily relocated to accommodate expansion of the play area. They also make it easy to contain the minimum necessary square footage around your play equipment, which maximizes the functionality of the material you buy, and minimizes the cost. They are very light weight and relatively inexpensive to ship.
You'll see on their web site that Childforms.com has a large selection of products from sand and water tables to their new, large play systems. If you are interested in anything you see, we'll be glad to talk to you about it.
In the past, we have also provided our customers with custom built border systems built with treated lumber or recycled plastic lumber. Another great option, if drainage allows, is to excavate the depth of the surfacing so the finished surface is even with the existing grade.
Your loose fill systems will probably also need one or two layers of heavy duty landscape fabric installed under your surfacing material. These commercial fabric products are much heavier than anything you can find at home improvement stores. This is to separate your surfacing materials from the ground beneath it. It is no guarantee that plants will not grow in a wood fiber surface. If your play area is very well drained, free of anything growing, and generally quite dry, you can do without the landscaping material.
